Sandra Neugärtner studied design at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau (Diplom), as well as economics (BSc), art education (MA), and art history in Munich, Berlin, and Zurich. In 2019 she received her doctorate in art history from the University of Erfurt with a dissertation on László Moholy-Nagy’s photogram (summa cum laude). After a postdoctoral position at the University of Erfurt (2021–22), she was a research associate and Akademische Rätin at Leuphana University Lüneburg from 2022 to 2025, where she completed her DFG-funded habilitation in 2026 (venia legendi in art history from the early modern period to the present).

Fellowships took her to Harvard University’s Department of History of Art and Architecture (2017–18) and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut (2024–25). In 2027 she will be a Research Scholar at Columbia University, New York.
